Seafair beats Airdrie in double overtime to win Western Canada Bantam AAA champions

Kamloops, BC – The Seafair Islanders are Western Canada Bantam AAA champions after securing a 2-1 victory in double overtime over Alberta’s Airdrie Xtreme during Sunday’s Gold Medal Game in Kamloops, BC. The five-team tournament featured provincial winners from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, along with the host Thompson Blazers.

Coming into the the Gold Medal Game, the Seafair Islanders and the Airdrie Xtreme shared identical 3-1 records after the round robin games, with the edge going to the Islanders, securing a 3-1 victory over the Xtreme in round robin play.

With patient back and forth play between both teams, the score remained scoreless after the first two periods of action. Finally, Craig Armstrong from the Airdire Xtreme broke the scoring deficit at the 8:15 mark midway through the third period. With time coming to a close, Jaden Uy equalized the scoring at the 2:22 mark to force the game into overtime. After five periods of championship play, Thomas Tien of the Seafair Islanders scored potentially the biggest goal of his life, winning the Western Canada Bantam AAA Championships.

In the tournaments Bronze Medal Game, the Winnipeg Hawks defeated the Thomson Blazers 3-2 to claim the Bronze Medal.
