Chicago, Ill. – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce 33 WHL players have been selected in the 2017 NHL Draft, which concluded today at the United Center in Chicago.
The seven WHL players selected in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft represented the most prospects provided out of any league in the world during the opening round of the draft. The 33 WHL players selected in the 2017 NHL Draft represented the second-most prospects provided out of any league in the world.
The Canadian Hockey League (WHL, OHL, QMJHL), as a whole, provided 89 of the 217 draft picks this year. In addition, 14 of the 31 first-round selections developed this season in the Canadian Hockey League.
Since the 1967 NHL Amateur Draft, a total of 2,000 players have been selected out of the WHL.
Friday provided a great start for the WHL, with seven players selected in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft, including Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings (second overall, Philadelphia Flyers), Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks (sixth overall, Vegas Golden Knights), Michael Rasmussen of the Tri-City Americans (ninth overall, Detroit Red Wings), Cal Foote of the Kelowna Rockets (14th overall, Tampa Bay Lightning), Juuso Valimaki of the Tri-City Americans (16th overall, Calgary Flames), Kailer Yamamoto of the Spokane Chiefs (22nd overall, Edmonton Oilers) and Henri Jokiharju of the Portland Winterhawks (29th overall, Chicago Blackhawks).
Saturday began with Kelowna Rockets forward Kole Lind being selected 33rd overall by the Vancouver Canucks.
Stuart Skinner became the first WHL goaltender selected in the 2017 NHL Draft when his hometown Edmonton Oilers used the 78th overall pick to take the Lethbridge Hurricanes puckstopper.
Among WHL clubs, the Tri-City Americans and Portland Winterhawks led the way with each having four players selected in the 2017 NHL Draft. The Brandon Wheat Kings, Spokane Chiefs and Medicine Hat Tigers each provided three players, while 17 of the WHL’s 22 teams had players taken on draft day.
